Merino wool base layers for kids – warm first layer, soft against the skin

Our kids' merino base layers are a two-layer knit: the outside is mulesing-free merino wool (19.5 microns) and the side against the skin is soft bamboo viscose. The merino warms and absorbs moisture without touching the skin directly, so the base layer also suits children whose skin is sensitive to wool. Base layers come in sizes 74–164 cm and the merino all-in-one for the youngest in sizes 74–104 cm.

Why a merino base layer for kids?

The main job of a base layer is to keep the skin dry. Merino wool absorbs moisture inside the fibre: its moisture regain is about 14–16%, compared with about 0.4% for polyester. With dry skin, the child is less likely to get chilled, even when play stops for a moment. A cotton base layer soaks up moisture but stays wet against the skin.

Is a merino base layer itchy for children?

The prickly feeling comes from wool fibres thicker than 30 microns, which press into the skin instead of bending against it. The merino fibre in our kids' base layers is 19.5 microns, and there is bamboo viscose against the skin as well. That is why the base layer usually also suits children who find an ordinary wool jumper too itchy. Skin sensitivity does vary from child to child, though. Which size base layer should my child wear?

A base layer should fit close to the body so it can move moisture away from the skin. One that is too loose does not touch the skin and leaves moisture behind, so allow less room to grow than for mid layers or outerwear. Choose by your child's height: 74–80, 86–92, 98–104, 110–116, 122–128, 134–140, 146–152 or 158–164 cm. Detailed measurements are in the size chart.

All-in-one or top and leggings?

Merino all-in-one (74–104 cm) – for the youngest. It does not ride up at the back when your child crawls or goes sledging.
Top or half-zip and leggings (74–164 cm) – for older children. The pieces can be washed separately and mixed and matched, and it is easier for the child to go to the toilet independently.

Is a base layer enough in sub-zero weather?

The base layer is the first layer. In sub-zero temperatures, add a warm mid layer on top and an outer shell that keeps out wind and snow. You will find warm kids' mid layers and mid-layer all-in-ones in their own collection, and our layering guide explains the order of the layers.

How do I wash a kids' merino base layer?

Wash it on a wool or delicates cycle at the temperature on the care label with a pH-neutral wool detergent. Do not use fabric softener or tumble dry. Alkaline detergent roughens the surface of the wool fibre, making the knit feel coarser wash after wash. Merino resists odour build-up, so after a day at nursery, airing is often enough. What are the base layers made of?

The Sensitive 225 knit is 46% merino wool, 44% bamboo viscose and 10% recycled polyamide, which acts as a support mesh between the layers. The fabric weighs 225 g/m². North Outdoor is a Finnish company specialising in merino wool clothing. We design our products in Finland and use only mulesing-free merino wool. The kids' base layers are made in China.
