A jacket is the outermost or second-outermost layer in a layering system, and it's where the choice of material matters most. Merino wool and wool fleece keep you warm even when damp — unlike synthetic fleece, which loses its feel once you sweat — and they shed no microplastics in the wash.

Wool fleece or traditional fleece?
Wool fleece is fleece knitted from merino wool. It breathes better than polyester fleece, slows odour build-up and is biodegradable. It feels the same soft, stretchy way you're used to from fleece.
Which layer does the jacket go in?
A merino fleece jacket is typically a mid layer: it works on its own in autumn and under a shell in winter. Lighter models also work over a shirt indoors.
How is the jacket washed?
At 30°C on a wool or delicates programme, with a wool detergent at pH 7 or below. No fabric softener and no tumble dryer. Merino wool cleans itself by airing, so it rarely needs washing.
