Men's merino wool base layers
A men's merino wool base layer is a close-fitting layer that moves moisture away from the skin and therefore keeps you warm even during breaks. Merino fibre absorbs about 14–16% of its weight in moisture, compared with about 0.4% for polyester. The range includes tops, zip necks, bottoms and a set, from light 150 g/m² fabric to a heavy 260 g/m² merino thermal. The merino fibre is 17.5–19.5 microns.

Which base layer for which activity?
- Cross-country skiing and running – Motion 150 or Intense pro 150. The light fabric won't make you overheat at high intensity.
- Downhill skiing, hiking and everyday wear – the Multi Action 200 base layer set or Active 210 (100% merino wool).
- Sensitive skin – Sensitive 225, with bamboo viscose against the skin and merino wool on the outside.
- Freezing weather and stationary activities – Arctic 260: ice fishing, hunting, outdoor work and spectating from the stands. In severe cold it is also worn as a mid layer over a lighter base layer.
Rule of thumb: the more you move, the lighter the base layer.
Synthetic or merino base layer?
A synthetic base layer (polyester or polypropylene) absorbs hardly any moisture; instead it moves it to the surface to evaporate. It dries quickly and suits hard, sweaty efforts. Merino wool absorbs moisture into the fibre, feels drier when you stop and resists odour better – often simply airing it out is enough between wears.
Is a merino wool base layer itchy?
Prickling is caused by wool fibres over 30 microns. The merino fibre in our base layers is 17.5–19.5 microns, so for most people it does not trigger an itch. Skin sensitivity does vary from person to person, though; Sensitive 225 is designed for sensitive skin. Read more: is merino wool itchy?
Should a base layer fit tightly?
A base layer should fit close to the body, because it only moves moisture when it touches the skin. A loose base layer leaves moisture on the skin, and excess fabric rubs as you move. You will find the measurements in our size guide.
How do I wash a merino wool base layer?
Wash your base layer at 30 °C on a wool or delicates programme with a wool detergent that has a pH of 7 or below. No fabric softener and no tumble dryer. The fabric shrinks by about 3–5% in the wash, which is allowed for in our sizing. Detailed instructions: merino wool washing guide.
